Overview
Lucius Modestus is the main protagonist of Thermae Romae, a Roman bath architect who is unexpectedly transported to modern Japan. There, he studies Japanese bathing culture and brings back ideas to improve Roman bathhouses. Serious, proud, and deeply dedicated to his craft, Lucius becomes a bridge between ancient Rome and contemporary Japan. His role in the series is both comedic and educational, as his time-traveling discoveries drive the story and highlight the similarities between the two cultures.
